CIVIC LEAGUE.

Miss Basten was the guest of honour at a social evening last night, held at the Priscilla Tea Rooms, whieh were arranged as a drawing room. There was a large gathering of members. The president, Mrs. D. W. McLean, in introducing the guest of the evening, spoke of her long connection with the work of the league and the pleasure that all the members felt in her recent election as a City Council member. Mrs. ■S. B. Axford, who was the next speaker, also congratulated Miss Basten on her success and mentioned that Miss Melville had also been a member of the league in its early days. The speaker thought that Miss Melville had done a great deal in breaking down the prejudices against women in municipal life. Mrs. J. M. Williamson, one of the earliest members of the league, mentioned the amount of goodwill Miss Basten enjoyed amongst women who were in the suburbs and could not vote for her, and said this goodwill helped to get her where she was. If women would only put the work they did for men at election time behind a woman candidate, the speaker assured her audience they would soon be represented in Parliament. Mrs. Ruby Watson also conveyed her good wishes to the new councillor. Miss Basten briefly replied, and thanked the members for their good wishes. Miss Mowbray, president of the Victoria League, was amongst those present. A musical programme was given by Mesdames Eade, GrahamWatson, H. T. King, J. R. Blake, A. S. Anstiss and E. M. Bridson. Dramatic sketches by Mrs. Minnis, Miss.es Lusk and Waterworth. Supper was then served. Amongst the visitors present from other societies were: Nurse Wood, Mrs. Newbold, Miss L. S. Garratt, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Charles Smith, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. CLeary, Miss Tremaine and Mrs. Bethwaite.
