OTAGO'S APPLE CROP.
THE SEASON'S EXPORTS.
REDUCED IN QUANTITY.
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") DUNEDIN, this day. The first shipment of Otago apples to London this season was carried by the Maimoa and is just due there. The last shipment of the season was put aboard the Port Darwin and is now on the water. The total export of Otago apples for the season was roughly 40,000 cases, including what was sent to South America. In the previous season the total was 68,000 cases. Probably a few thousand more cases could have been exported if shipping had been available. The main cause of the reduction, however, was the shortage of the crop owing to exceptionally severe weather. Frosts and a succession of hailstorms ruined thousands of apple and pear trees for the season. Though the loss proved very serious, it was not from a cause that dismays orchardists, but was of quite an unusual nature.
