\V. J. Bowden will ride Nukumai in the Great Northern Hurdles. Maunga has arrived at Wanganui, in yicw of keeping his engagements at the forthcoming meeting. Although Oration had no chance with Benzora on Thursday, he ran a good race, and cannot be left out of calculations for races in the near future. Denier, who finished second to Toapaiti in the Ngamutu Hack Handicap at Egmont on Saturday, won the Waiata Stakes, six furlongs, at the recent Feilding autumn meeting. He is trained by W. Pine. Yoma is right back to form, and will have to be respected in forthcoming engagements. He scored on both days at the Egmont meeting, and his next appearance will probably be at Wanganui this week. Toapaiti, who won a double at the Egmont meeting on Saturday, is a four-year-old gelding by Antagonist, and last season won two juvenile races at the Stratford annual meeting. They were his only previoue victories. Kyngzone, who is engaged in minor events at the Auckland June meeting, is receiving his preparation at Takapuna. The Royal Soult horse is stated to he doing well, although he has been rather disappointing in his previous racing displays Gilgai appears to be a pretty fair sort of a 'chaser. On the first day of Egmont meeting he finished second in the Hack Steeples, and on Saturday won the Adamson Steeples in good style. He is among those entered for the Wanganui Steeplechase next Thursday. Thursby is looking in nice condition, and should be well forward when the June meeting arrives. The Thurnham gelding will be well suited with the heavy going that is usually the case during the winter months, having won under similar conditions previously. Dick ran a very fair race in the Egmont Steeplechase, although he was never likely to be in the money. As a result, Dick is now being discussed again for the Great Northern. He has never run a bad race at Ellerslie, and Thursday's showing was distinctly encouraging. Western Lass, the winner of the Second Nursery Handicap, on the fourth day of the A.J.C. autuiaa meeting, is by Westcourt—Wolaroi Lass, and is, therefore, a full-sister to Appellant, who races in Mr. Ernest Alison's colours. Western Lass carried 8.11,• and ran the distance, seven furlongs, in 1.262. J. Fryer started two hacks in the sprint even at Egmont on Thursday— Eka and Bright Glow. It was Eka's first race for some time, but she began well and was always prominent. Bright Glow, a three-year-old Day cornet mare, did not show up early,* but she finished up alongside Eka behind the fourth horse.

Zircon was stated to have run a good race on the first day of the Egmont meeting, and therefore it was not surprising to see him win on Saturday. Last season Zircon performed pretty fairly over "the sticks," and it looks as though he is going to play a prominent part in similar reaces this season. He can handle heavy going well.

Degnge won the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslic last June, but she has done very little since that; in fact she has only started on three occasions. However, by the manner in which she won at Egmonv on Saturday she is back to her best fovm, and she may take some beating if started in the Connelly Handicap at the Wanganui meeting this week.

Scaramotiche was given a run over five furlongs on the sand track at Ellerslie on Saturday morning and moved very freely. This horse has put on a lot of condition lately, although he will require more time before being Reasoned, and it may be well into <*ie spring before he is capable of doing himself justice.

Dnnae created a surprise by winning the York Handicap at the last Auckland winter meeting and paying very long ndde. However, she has failed to repeat that form. She w.is a starter «t the Egmont meeting, and on Saturday ran quite a good race in the David*>m Handicap till the straight wae reached, where she faded out. Danae has engagements at the forthcoming A.R.C. meeting.

Peter TloHtt wan a bit unlucky to utrike Llewellyn in the Kipnont Steeplechase (naya a southern writer). Llewellyn in about twice hie size, and in the running for th« jump* Llewellyn's manner of running in all the time did not give Peter Rona much room. In lu<:t, at one fence he wuh nearly forced off. Despite thin, it looked atj if Llewellyn always had hi* opponent measured. Llewellyn look* a better liorne this neatton, and may make good in more important event*. Peter Roea is not exactly an experienced Htecple<:haeer, but he made a good nhowing, jumping really well, and ho Hhould be liurd to beat again shortly.

The Great Northern HurdlcH and Great Northern SteeplechaHo are run on Huccceeive daye thin year, and the double event will probably be more difficult to uccompliHh next month on that account. it is understood that Comical i» not Kointf to be asked to contest both eventi, and that hie niisHion will be the eteeplechane. He i« ulho unlikely to contest both the Century Hurdles and Steeplechase at Waiigiuiiii, the cross -country event again being hin probable engagenwnt. Comical has done good work at Wanganui plnce his arrival, and he it over the big fences on Sat-

As B. H. Morris will be on Civility in the Connolly Handicap, Mr. J. Bull may elect not to start Ngata in this event.

Day Bell and Modest Boy were railed to Wanganui last evening, to fulfil engagements at the meeting to be held there on Thursday and Saturday next.

S. G. Lindsay has arrived at Ellerslie with Bahadur, Alonsoa and The Dansant. The two first-named are to race at the Auckland winter meeting, and they both appear to have done well of late. Lady Spalpeen looked as if she would have had something to say in the decision of the hack steeplechase the first day at Hawera had she not tossed out at the sod wall three furlongs from home. Income has been galloping well on the tracks lately, and he made quite a good showing in the Mcßae Memorial at Egmont (says "Watcher.") Although it is improbable that he will again reach his old form, it would be unwise to regard him as unlikely to win another stake under suitable conditions. R. McTavish displayed good horsemanship on Manly at Hawera on Thursday (remarks a southern writer). He got into considerable bother in the first furlong, and was soon in the rear. McTavish then took his mount over to the rails, and, saving every available inch of ground, got a beautiful run up on the home turn. Even 1 as they hit the straight Manly had to make up four or five lengths on the leaders, and the way in which McTavish had saved him in running enabled him to finish on and get the stake.
