SIR LUKE FILDE3, R.A,

(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON". February 27. The death is announced of .Sir Luke Fildes, R.A., aged S4 rears.

The famous painter of "The Doctor" (hung in the Tate Gallery; has been a prominent R.A. since ISST. Born in England he studied at the South Kensinstoa Art Schools and the Royal Acadamy, and was for many years an illustrator of book 3 and magazines, being engaged by Charles Dickens to illustrate "Edwin Drood." Later he took up the painting or subject pictures and portraits, and in 191S lie painted the State portraits of King Edward VII. and Queen Alexandra. Although his style is now considered old-fashioned, his pictures are finely composed and excellent.!}- drawn, while the colouring is always harmoniom,
