FLAG QUESTION.
New Phase in South African Problem. CO-OPERATION ASKED. (Received 11 a.m.) CAPETOWN, February 27. The flag question has entered a new phase. The commission appointed by the Government has submitted its report, but in the meantime the Flag Committee, an organisation representing the Englishspeaking section, interviewed the Government, strongly urging that if the Union Jack is not included the bill should not be proceeded with. The Minister of the Interior (Hon. Dr. Malan) has now issued a statement that the Government is impressed by the importance of settling the question, but strongly desired that it should be settled by consent if possible. It has invited the co-operation of the Flag Committee with the Government Flag Commission in discussing the various designs.
