However, Peter Rosa had no difficulty in beating Pentagram by a neck with Pendennis half a length away third. Then followed Uralla, Gold Rain, Gold Rep, kawa, and Archibald. The .last-named two were never dangerous at any 6tage. Peter Rosa seems to be back to his best form and should be seen to advantage again shortly. A lot of use was made of Pendennis in the early stages.

A Good Field. ' ' Despite the Csovs sweepstake for starters, 24 paraded for the Shaftesbury Hack Handicap. Awarere was favourite, carrying about £50 more than- Valkon,. while Abbess was next fancied. Billikins was the early leader, but it was not long before Tea Time and Venus Abbey were i" front attended by Billikins, Quinsilia, Respirator and Constellation. Awarere then took charge to win by half-a-length from Tea Time, who beat Quinsilia by three lengths. Billikins, Winsome, Boy, Valkon and Valve were next. The stake to the winner, with the added money, would be worth £260. Only five went to the post for the Somers' Handicap Flying Juliet was mado twice as good a favourite as Phaola, while Macroom was next fancied. Across the top Flying Juliet was attended by Macroom, King Arch, and Phaola together with Catclaw last. Flying Juliet was first to turn for home from Macroom, King Arch and Phaola. Nothing, however, had a chance with Flying Juliet, who won easily by two lengths and a-half from Macroom, with King Arch two lengths further back. Catclaw was fourth, with Phaola last. Phaola had not raced for some time and was not ready. In The Shade Again.

Ti Tree and Valroe were scratched fgr Vie Juvenile Handicap, and In The Shadn was made favourite, carrying over three times as much aa Golden Wedding, while Exalted was next best backed. Golden Wedding stood on the mark, and took no part in the race. Exalted led across the top from In The Shade, Corbell, and Master Clements. Exalted was first to turn for home from In The Shads { Auriculus, and High Tide, but In The IJJiade w<as in charge at the distance, and beat Exalted 1. a neck. Auriculus was three lengths away third, followed by High Tide, Master Clements, Yellow Bonnet, and Calaris. A number of the youngsters had not previously raced, and did not jump off too well, with the result that they made a straggling start of it. * v The Big Event.

Plialoa was the only defection from the Herries Memorial, Cup, leaving a baker's dozen to contest the stake. Pegawav was entrusted witli over £1100, while Eden Hall (£.s(iOi and Town Bank ;(£500) were next fancied. Day Guard, as' usual, was rushed to the trout, with Barometer, Delightment, Pegaway, Town Bank, Pelham, Miss Vera, The Author, Charlady, and Queen Arch next. Eden Hall was a similar distance away third, with Pelhatn. Town Bank, Wedding March, Barometer, Charlady, Desert Glow, The Author, and Queen Arch next. After the race, J. T. Jamiescn lodged a complaint against the winner, Pegaway, on the ground that Eden Hall had been interfered with near the finish, but the stewards, after hearing evidence, dismissed the objection. Dead Heat for Third. Tho Waihou Handicap attracted twelve runners, and Aussie £977,- Serang £837 and Heisler £373, were best backed. Dan Quin was first to show out, but -across the top Dobbin ran to the front • from York Abbey and Dan Quin. Dobbin was first to turn for home from Dan Quin, York Abbey, Aussie, Archeno and Heisler, and had no trouble in beating Dan Quin by a length and a-half.
