The oil-cans with which engineers and mechanics oil their machinery have a long tapering spout, and just in front of the handle there is a button which can be pressed down with the thumb, but rises directly the thumb is removed. The press button moves a rod which is attached to a valve at the entrance to the spout. In the ordinary way this valve closes the opening, but when it is desired that the oil shall escape through the spout the pressing of the button opens the valve. The spring attached to the connecting rod causes the button to rise when the pressure of the thumb is removed. The mechanism varies in different forms of cans, but the principle is the same, namely, the opening and closing of a valve. If the can should fall or be knocked over the closed valve prevents j the oil running out and being wasted '
