MARKING OUT THE DOMAIN.
WORK HAD TO BE DONE TWICE
Yesterday's heavy rain, in addition to marring the reception to the Duke and Duchess in the city in the morning. did its best (or rather worst) to ruin to-day's magnificent children's displayon the Domain, washing away the hundreds of white lines which had been marked on the green.
But the school teachers and officers of the Education Department, who had spent long horns in arranging the display and supervising the children in their practices, had no intention of letting the whims of Jupiter Pluvius upset their programme, and before six o'clock this morning a body of willinhelpers was ready to do the job all over again. Under the direction of the groundsman, Mr. Pearce, the teachers and members of the committee set to work with a will, with the result that by eight o'clock the huge gridiron had been marked out. There being a breeze and plenty of sunshine, the lines dried clean and white, so that the huge natural stage was as neatly marked out as ever long before the first body of white frocked girls were ready to march into position.
Every assistance was lent the educational authorities in organising the display bv Mr. Tyler, the assistant citv engineer.
