WAITOA RIVER CONTROL BOARD.
(From Oar Own Correspondent.)
TE AROHA, Monday.
A meeting of the Waitoa River Control Board was held at Waitoa, Mr. F. Walters presiding.
Correspondence was received from the Minister of Lands in regard to a con- | ference, wherein he suggested that the boards concerned with the Waitoa River scfceme should meet the Chief Land Drainage Engineer in conference with a view to arriving at a satisfactory understanding. The chairman said that in addition to Mr. Campbell, the Hungahunga Drainage Board and Messrs. Samuels and Macmillan, M.P., should be invited to attend. If the conference was held they could see what the Minister meant by amalgamation and would be able to place their own position before the Department. Mr. Wagstaff said the correspondence showed that they had advanced a step in the right direction. The Minister had mentioned a subsidy, which was something that should not be lost sight of. In regard to the amalgamation of all three boards, it was not clear whether the Minister meant them to amalgamate on this one question or generally. That was a matter chat could be fixed up at the conference. In answer to a question Mr. Andrews said a portion of the Minister's letter made him wonder where the drainage boards cease to function. Mr. Wagstaff: We finish on the land. The function of a drainage board is to drain the land, and the river is a national waterway. After further discussion it was decided to ask Mr. Campbell, also Mr. Thomp son, to attend a conference as suggested by the Minister, also that the Hungahunga Drainage Board be requested to send represenathes.
