GRAMMAR SCHOOLS.
REOPENING TO-DAY. ATTENDANCE OF OVER 2800. HOSTEL AT MOUNT ALBERT. The five grammar schools of Auckland opened to-day with an attendance of over 2800. In several important respects the new school year is one of special interest. The grammar school that has been built at Takapuna began its first school year to-day. and the hostel at Mount Albert (Irammar School was opened as tli" lir>t hostel for grammar boys in Auckland. Opening attendances at the four established schools to-day and at the beginning of la.»t year, were: — 1027 192<i Auckland Grammar School . . !).->0 943 Mt. Albert (Irammar School .">O3 Auckland Girls' (Irammar School .">.">7 049 Epsom Girls' (irammar School .">74 (iO.'i The attendances at Takapuna are well over •200." At the Auckland (Iranimar School the accommodation is fully taxed. A new gymnasium has been built at the school and will be opened with complete equipment in a few days. Arrangements will later be made io: classes and an instructor. The work of preparing a site for a hostel on a part of the school grounds is now in progress, and it is hoped that a grant will shortly be obtained for the proposed building. StafT changes at the school include the appointment of Mr. Harwocd. 8.A.. M.Se.. previous senior science master at Napier Jligh School, to the position of senior science master, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. A. I>. Ryder. Mr. N. A. Winter lia> retired on superannuation and Mr. A. \\\ Short has been transferred t<> the new i'akapuiiH (Irammar School. Overcrowding Relieved. .Mr. .7. Drummmid. headmaster, said to-day that the new school at Takapuna had relieved overcrowding and, consequently, there had been no overflow to the Mt. Albert (Irammar School this year. A decrease of 19 was shown in the opening roll at the Mt. Albert Grammar School, but this entirely accounted for by the overflow that had come last vear from the Auckland Grammar School. Mr. !•. W. Gamble, headmaster, considered that if the same district had been drawn upon as in previous years there would have been a roll of' 5.50. Over HO boys had been lost to the new school at Takapuna. A hostel, with accommodation for 40 had been opened, in connection with the school, at the corner of New North Road and Birch Street. Seventeen boys had been admitted. Previously used as a boys' probation home, the building had been completelv renovated an.l remodelled. Mrs. Walker, late matron of Middlemore House, at King's College is charge, and Messrs. H. L. Towers and T. Scott, ex-masters of Kind's College, will be the resident master?.
