BATTLE FOR LIFE.
SURF-BATHING TRAGEDY.
YOUNG MAN DROWNED. GALLANT RESCUE EFFORTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) TAURANGA, this day. While surf bathing at Mount Maunganui yesterday morning, a young man named Paul Mischcfski (21) was drowned. Several people were in the surf at the time when the deceased and another man named Armstrong got into difficulties. His mates got Armstrong out and called to two others, Lewis Peglar and Dudley Lloyd, to help Mischcfski. who was unable to swim. This they did. and were swimming to shore with the tie - ceased floating, when a big breaker caused him to grasp Lloyd and both went under. Peeler dived and brought both up.and Lloyd then stnuk out for the shore to get the lifeline while Pegler supported Mischeiski. Before reaching the shore Lloyd noticed Pegler alone and went back and found both had gone done and that Pegler had lost hold of Mischcfski. Lloyd and Pegler were exhausted when they reached shore. Meantime two others attempted to reach the deceased with a lifeline, but he disappeared. The police were informed and a search was made for the body, which up to this afternoon had not been recovered. A younger brother of the deceased was drowned on the inner beach at the Mount just two years ago. The parents reside at Inglewood.
