MINING NEWS.
KAWARAU. SHARES FIRM A LITTLE. At the third call yesterday Kawarau shares sold down to 2/3, but recovered, to 2/10 at the morning call to-day. Noon saw these shares a little easier, sales being made from 2/10 to 2/7, with sellers at 2/8 and buyers 2/6. At a meeting of the Kawarau Control Board appointed by the Government, held on August 30, it was resolved that the following regulation be submitted to the Minister of Public Works for , approval, viz.: "That the company shall supply the board with a record of every ', movement made to each gate, with the I date and hour." A deputation was received from the Mackenzie family, of Walter Peak. They pointed out how their sheds and wharves at Mt. Nicolas might be prejudicially affected by the operation of the dam. They also stated that they anticipated trouble when floods came on a high lake. The board approved of the gates being closed as from August 30 until the level of the lake had reached the six-foot gauge at Queenatown wharf, or until otherwise instructed by the board in case of emergency, but in any case for not more than ten days from that date. There are 126 claims on the river, and the men a re all anxious to get to work. Some of these claims are situated between deep gorges where the difficulty will be to dispose of the over-burden that has to be lifted to get at the wash at the bottom of the river. Miners are, however, proverbially hopeful, and the owners of these claims contend that the fact that they are in a gorge will guarantee there will not be as much debris to lift as in places where the river is spread out wider. The argument is that the rush of the water through a gorge will prevent much debris from being deposited. At the present time, the Shotover River is carrying a considerable volume of water, but that does not apply to the contribution from the Arrow River.
