WHAT ROSE CAN DO.
A RACE IN PARIS HEAT. THE FIELD WORN DOWN, j -J WINS EASING UP. « 4 (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") •, WELLINGTON, this day. Before proceeding to Holland, after being unsuccessful in his bid for honours at the English athletic championships, R. A. Rose paid a visit to France. I Writing of this visit. Rose says that in Paris he found the heat terrific. H> was entered in only one rase, 3000 metres, at the Perching Stadium. About thirty crowded into a bu3 which should only have carried 15, consequently by the time they arrived at the grounds they were in "a proper old sweat." Ha got"into his togs right away to get cool, but this was impossible, and one had to ! keep drinking to keep his mouth moist. ! Just before the race he took a lump of sugar, which gave wonderful relief. When he got on the mark at 5.30 the heat was still terrific. He was the only outsider jin the race. An American entered, but I stood down on account of the heat. I It appea/s that the French competitors were out to try and make one of their own men break a record, and this man had two pacers. Of this Rose knevr nothing until he had covered three lap?, •when he was pacing the pacers. Hard ■work they had. Rose was pocketed for a time, but he got out and kept with the front man after that. When they entered the straight the Frenchman wag leading by three yards, but no sooner had Rose drawn level than the other threw in the sponge, and Rose won, easing up, in 5.41, beating the French record by 2-se.
