CALLIOPE ROAD CONCRETING.
r « I PROGRESS OF THE WORK. 3 SPOIL FOR STANLEY PARK. The permanent formation of Calliope I Road, for which special -financial arrange- . ! men ts have been made by the Devonport . i Borough Council in the way of a loan to relieve unemployment, came in for [ some sharp discussion at the meeting ' last evening. Mr. Aldridge introduced the matter by : commentng on the delay from the time 'the work was authorised to the calling I for tenders. He expressed the opinion that the preliminaries should have been T treated as urgent, so that the work could have 'been put in hand almost immediately. There were over 600 unemployed still walking the city, some of whom might have had work, if the borough engineer had not personally been '. too buey. The Mayor: You're a member of the , Works Committee; bring it up there. CMr. Aldridge replied that he had brought the matter up at every Works Committee meeting. Hie present object was not to complain about his com- _ j mittee, but to seek official information . ! from the whole council in order that |J he might defend its policy. He further T queried the necessity for three weeks ' for perusal of tenders, and in conclusion P asked that all superfluous cutting from c the road should be guaranteed for ? Stanley Park. . I Mr. Walker supported the previous P ; speaker and thought that it should be the T ' council's policy to expedite in every possible way the present programme of ,_ works. 3 Mr. John Henderson, chairman of the .' Works Committee, in a spirited reply j reviewed the works at present underl taken by the 'borough. Devonport at the 8 present time had over a hundred extra . men on the paysheet. A tour of the j I borough would convince any critic that active progress was being made, and r that the borough officials were doing L their utmost. There had been a lot o-x 0 preliminary work in connection with the t Calliope Road plans, and this had been ~ increased 'by an alteration in level* { which meant still further delay. From 1 now on the work would be straight- . forward, and he could assure council of I his endeavour to complete all projects -tin hand during the current financial year. c I Mr. Ellisdon pressed the matter of i improving the Stanley Park reclamation, i while Calliope Road work was in 'prof gress, and this was unanimously agreed f to. After the engineer had displayed the > detail plans of waterworks, retaining f walls and sewers rendered necessary, j ■Mγ. Aldridge declared himself satisfied I with the explanations offered, and the • matter dropped.
