SHOTOVER BACKING UP.
OTHER TRIBUTARIES SWOLLEN PROSPECTING AT KAWARAU. CtAIM-HOLDERS NOT PERTURBED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The gauge at Queenstown is still below the 4ft 4in mark this morning, so that the rise of the lake since the gates were closed is still something less than an inch. No claim-holder is attempting to see how much gold can be won. At present, I the object in every case is to gain the necessary information about the claim for future use. . A reporter was shown three nice little nuggets found yesterday on claim 86. Their total weight was three or four pennyweights, and they were worth only about £1, but they are of value as indicating the presence of good gold in the vicinity. A report from Cromwell last night stated that the Shotover had backed the Kawarau up some nine inches. Prospecting on the natural bridge claim, workers secured with the dish two and a half ounces, the largest piece weighing six pennyweights. Good samples amounting to three-quarters of an ounce are reported from several other claims. One from Lower Consolidated was got out of a crevice. Another, of threequarters of an ounce, was got out oi "Golden Bed." The Vogel's Vision Company are putting through some likely looking wash. It is stated by a competent miner that no virgin ground has yet been uncovered by the damming of the lake, and that a deep overburden exists. Kawarau shares- dropped heavily on 'Change yesterday, there being sales at 2/3, 2/4, and 2/5. The following resolution has been com municated to the Press by the claimholders:—"lt was resolved that those interested in the ' claims on the , Kawarau River are in no way perturbed by the quantity of water in the river not being lowered to the extent expected. The lateness of the season and the fact that the Shotover, Nevis, Arrow and other tributaries are discharging more water than during the past six weeks must be borne in mind. While these facts have been a little disi appointing to some the claim-holders are ' convinced that when the gates are closed next winter results will, in view iof the present prospects, be satis- • factory." • It is understood that one question eni gaging the attention of the meeting was the securing of stronger representation ' of claim-holders on the directorate of : the Kawarau Goldmining Company and that the appointment of a Dunedin comE mittee of shareholders was considered.
