LOAN POLL CARRIED.

g:reat south road. scheme now complete. The ratepayers in the Papakura and Wairoa Ridings of the Manukau County Council yesterday approved of the proposal to raise a loan of £10,500 for tbe concreting of the Great South Road from the southern boundary of tbe Manurewa Town District to the northern boundary of the Papakura Town District, by 'an overwhelming majority. The proposal was carried by 5-37 votes against 43. There are 776"ratepayers on the roll but the voting is on a property basis, the ratepayers having from one "to three votes. The poll was an exceptionally good one. The loan" of £10,500 will be supplemented by a subsidy of £7818 from the Main Highways Board. It is proposed to reduce the road ■to permanent gradients, levels and curves. There will be a strip of concrete 18ft wide in the centre, with 4ft shoulders of metal. The whole of the 66 chains concerned is in the Papakura Riding, but the Wairoa Riding was included in the voting because it will benefit by the road. Everything is now in readiness for the calling of tenders for the concreting of the 3 miles 52 chains of the Great South Road in Papatoetoe Riding. The ratepayers sanctioned the loan for this work last April. It will be about two months before matters can be arranged for the calling of tenders for the concreting of the Papakura section. Yesterday's poll makes provision for the concreting of the last section of the Great South Roy from Auckland to the northern boundary of the Franklin County, a distance of about 20 miles.
