For an off-day there was a fai attendance at Carlaw Park this alter noon, when the second of the three trial matches to be played in Auckland was decided. The teams were: —
Auckland—Gregory, Mansill, Brisbane, Littlewood. Webb, Lewis, Delgrosso, Clarke. Hutt, Payne, O'Brie4 (Devonport), Townseiid, Herring.
Combined.—Eckhoff, Hickey. Desmond, Sanders, Yorrath, Vivian, Wilson-Hall, Mouatt, Thomas, Devinc, Menzies, Tallcntirc, Carroll.
The first bright item was when Hickey broke away and took the game to Auckland's quarter, and then Wilson* Hall made a tricky run before passing to Devinc, to Sanders. The latter had a clear run in. but was called back top a throw on. From lon~,> play the baU went to Brisbane, to Mansill, the latter , being thrown out within a couple of yards of Combined's line. Devine, oifside, Mansill made a good but unsuc* cessful shot to goal from nearly halfway. A tine try was scored by WilsonHall, Coming round on the blind side lie short punted over Gregory, and with. Sanders they dribbled over the lino, Wilson-Hall touching down. Mouatt converted. Combined 5 Auckland 0 Webb threw a score away when lie had Brisbane and Mansill waiting top the ball, but lie decided to go alone. Vivian was responsible for relieving the pressure. Delgrosso sent Littlewoodj away, but Mouatt came with a dasli and downed the winger. Vivian nipped in and got in a useful kick. Carroll, Devinc and Menzies brought oil neat passing, and a run by Hickey and Desmond saw the latter get across, but he iost the ball. Securing the ball in their own twenty-five. Combined added to> their score. Thomas picked up and gave to Wilson-Hall, to Sanders, the latter going over. Mouatt goaled. Combined 10 ; Auckland 0 O'Brien tried to go too far instead of handing to his supports and was downed by Vivian, a rare scoring chance going astray. Sanders registered his second try when he intercepted a pass from Gregory to Littlcwood and raced down to score. Mouatt missed. Combined 13 Auckland 0 A good deal of the play was ragged and there-was an absence of snap about the passing of the Auckland backs. A good bout of passing was brought oil' by Lewie, Webb, Brisbane, Mansell and back to Brisbane, who was downed on the line. From the scrum Delgrosso secured and wormed his way across. Mausell goaled. Combined 13 Auckland 5 Payne, Ilutt and Lewis broke away but Payne's pass to centre was taken by Desmond. The play was fairly fast but too many mistakes were being made. Hickey, Desmond and Mouatt looked like bringing off a score and then Gregory and Mansill had the ball at toe and an open field, but Mouatt came .across and kicked over the sideline. It was a good save. 11l the iirst half Delgrosso and Lewis scored for Auckland, both tries being converted by Mansell. The first spell ended:—Combined .- 13 Auckland 10
