ONEHUNGA SENSATION.

BOROUGH OFFICIAL ARRESTED.

CHARGED WITH THEFT.

LARGE AMOUNT INVOLVED.

A sensation of some magnitude 'Was' , caused, in Onoliuujra this morning, w heu it became known that an official occupy, ing a responsible position on the staff of the Onehungu. Borough Council had been arrested by the police. The fact was made public when the accused appeared at the Unehunga Police Court this morning to answer a charge of stealing the sum of £-1 14/ on June 2(i last, from the Uneliunga Borough Council. Sergeant J. A. Cruickshank said this was a small amount, but other charges were pending against the defendant which were practically certain to increase the amount to £300. He asked for the case to be remanded until July 14, and if bail was allowed that it be commensurate with the total amount involved. He also supported the defendant's request that his name be suppressed until the ca>c is tried nest week.

The presiding Justice, Mr. J. Lakinjr, at first demurred to suppressing the name, as suspicion, he said, would fall upon other borough officials. Hβ was not opposed to the request, except for that reason. Knowing the man's position lie would order his name to be suppressed, altogether if he could. The defendant was remanded until July 14, in the meantime the name to be "suppressed.

Accused was allowed bail in the sum of £300, with two sureties of £150 each. Two bondsmen came forward.

At the request of SeTgeant Cmick» shank, the defendant was ordered to report daily to the police.
