PRODUCTION OF NITRATES.
AN AMBITIOUS PEOJECT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUKEDIX, Tuesday. Tlie scheme for producing nitrates through power generated in the Southern Sounds has been advanced a further stage. Mr. J. Orchiston and two of the experts who are associated with him have returned to Dunedin after taking levels for the tunnel that is to take the Manapouri water from the lake to the cove. They stated that this tunnel will not need to be as long as was at first expected. It was originally thought that the tunnel would be six and a-half miles in length, but a deviation now proved possible will shorten the tunnel by about a mile. This men a saving of nearly £200.n00. The magnitude uf the scheme may be judged from ihe fait that, apart from the sour.v?, which i- to be the main supply, tiic company wiil haw at command the water? of a number of considerable streams that concentrate ■within a mile of smith Suiincl. and can be made available lor the construction of the works and in aiding the project generally. It i> computed that this auxiliary force represents 30.000 h.p.
