SUDAN UNITED MISSION.
WORK AMONG THE NUBA TRIBES. TAKFWELL TO AUCKLANDERS. 3lr. ml Mrs. D. X. MaeDiannid and Nune O. Brekton, Sudan United Mission ■Workers, will he tendered a public farewell this evening. Mr. and Mrs. MacDiarmid will shortly return to their station in Hieban. Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, while Nurse Buckton, of Auckland, is to join the medical staff at Melut, on the River Xile. During the past three weeks Mr. MacDiarmid, besides speaking , at a num'icr of city and suburban churches, has addressed many gatherings, including the students of. the Auckland University College, the Rotary Club, the League of Nations Union, and the directors of the T.M.C.A. In addition to her usual missionary activities, Mrs. MacDiarraid, -who, when at the mission station, is the only white ■woman among millions of the Nuba tribes, has written the Xuba language, a task which hitherto has never been attempted. Some idea of the difficulty of the work may be gathered from the fact that within a radius of P>o miles from the station no less Ihan eight languages and at least a dozen dialects are spoken among the different tribes. On lier return to the interior Mrs. MacDiarmid wtH take with her the first printed primers of this new language. Mr. MacDiarmid's work at the station. from the point of view of discipline, is run very largely on Boy Scout lines, has lieen chiefly in regard to the training of the llovs in the mission school, which he himself established. It i? anticipated that this evening's meeting, which will he held in the Baptist Tabernacle, will be very largely attended.
