OPOSSUM SEASON.
RESTRICTED TO A MONTH. OPENS ON MAY 31. In some parts of the Dominion the opening of the opossum season means the commencement of a profitable industry, which returns a considerable amount of revenue to acclimatisation societies. The opossum naturally does best in a cold climate, but it has become well distributed in parts of the Auckland province, and some good skins are obtained. The regulations provide that opossums may be taken or killed only by means of the running noose method, or by trapping, with the exception that bona fide orchardists may at any time, kill opossums within certain prescribed areas. The season in the Auckland district for the taking of opossums will be open from May 31 to June 30, both days in- [ elusive. The animals are reported to be plentiful in different parts of Waitemata and Rodney counties. In a number of the Southern districts the season will be open for two months.
