The "Times" cricket writer, commenting on the Leicester match, says: "Collins was not merely slow, he was timorous, an odious adjective not unfairly describing most of the Australian batting. The only rational explanation is lack of practice."— (Reuter.) THE PIiAY DESCRIBED. (Eeceivefl 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 4. The weather was fine and the wicket good. The attendance reached 3000. Australia's innings continued quietly, neither Gregory nor Grimmett taking any risks with "Skelding and Geary, who were bowling a good length. Grimmett displayed strength on the leg side, and raised* enthusiasm by. sending Skelding to the boundary. After frequent changes of the bowlers, Gregory opened out nnd lifted Shipman for six into the pavilion. Two balls later Grimmett cut Shipman hard towards second slip. Astill jumped and stopped the fast travelling ball, and then fell, catching it on the second attempt almost on the ground. Gregory's score included twe sixes and fifteen fours. He gave a bright, spectacular, and sound exhibition, and received an ovation on returning to the pavilion. He battec for 145 minutes. LEICESTER IN DIFFICULTIES Gregory and Everett opened Austra lia's attack. The latter was making his firat appearance, which caused niucl) interest. He was the faster of the two but his length was variable. Berry who is not yet twenty-one,, faced the bowling with easy confidence. After i promising display he mistimed Grim mett, and was easily caught at mid-on Everett lost his length about lunch, bul Grimmett kept the batsmen on the qu vive, Sharp using hie pads freely. Grimmett kept a perfect length, ii contrast to Gregory, who varied greatly Grimmett was tossing up balls for th<

Macartney nonplusßQd the batsmen by vaiytnjr his pace and swing. Leicester follows on. When Shipman was one, Bydef missed an easy return. Ryder, aftet the first two singles, bowled four successive maidens, and kept an nnecorable length, dead on the wicket, while the batsmen refused to go for the occasional loose ones.—^Reute*..)
