MOTOR BUS SPEEDING.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Unless urgent and drastic steps are taken to control the speeding of 'buses some more serious accident than the one which took place near Newmarket last week will occur. The following two instances of reckless driving came under my notice last week, viz.:. Trip I.—Up Anzac Avenue into Symonds Street, an opposition bus ahead. Our driver speeded up and passed the opposition near Alfred Street, taking a course between the latter and a tramway pole. My right arm was resting with wrist bone on window frame, and in passing the pole my hand was struck by it, whilst not a foot separated the near side of o.ut bus from the opposition vehicle. Trip 2. —Travelled from Chief Post Office to Newmarket in eight minutes, including stops, pace down Khyber Pass not less than 30 miles per hour. There was no chance of pulling up quickly should occasion arise. The balance of £he trip as far as the Royal Oak was done in eleven minutes, totalling 10 minutes in all. We passed everything on the road. I am afraid some of the tramway motormen are responsible in part for this speeding by their attempts to block the buses. Three separate times I "have seen niotormen pull up their cars between stops when a bus has been endeavoumng to catch up and pass the tram. Buses must not pass stationary trams, inif speed up to pass between regulation stops. Motormen on Manukau Road arid Remuera Road have pulled up between such stopping places so as to force the bus.es to atop, and bythat means kept the latter in the rear I and blocked traffic generally.—l am, etc., TRAVELLER.
