AGED SPORTSMAN'S DEATH.

AT LAKE ELLESMERE

FOUND IN THE WATER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Late on Monday afternoon, Mr. William John Putnam (72) was found dead in two feet of water at Lake Ellesmere. Mr. Putnam is 'an ex-steyedore,, well known in Lyttelton, and after his retirement he made a practice for many years of visiting Lake Ellesmere in the duck shooting season. On Monday, with a young companion, he was shooting from, a maimai about two hundred yards off shore. The younger man left his companion early in the afternoon to return ashore. : About two hours later he discovered the body in the water, about twelve yards from the door of the hiding place. It is believed that the old man. died of heart failure, as he had a serious attack on Friday night.
