KERBSIDE PETROL PUMP

ADOPTED BY WELLINGTON. NOT A NUISANCE. ' BETTER THAN* BENZINE TINS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. Tho Wellington City Council decided -to grant permits for the erection, of bowser petrol pumps in the streets. The city engineer made a favourable report on the question, stating: "The bowser pump is not a nuisance from the sanitary standpoint. I think it will be found out in practice that the motor trade can look after itself, and that if more pumps are erected than are required, they will automatically 'be taken out." •'Provided the. safety of pedestrians is taken care of as much as possible *by eliminating the frequent crossing of footpaths by motor vehicles, as will be done if kerbside pumps are erected," the engineer continues, "I do not see why the cousicil -should interfere with a growing want. The advantage of tills method -of selling fuel for motor vehicles over the present system of the benzine tin is undoubted. * Cases will continue to crop up with unusual conditions, and a general clause will be required providing for the refusal of any licenses ■which, in the opinion of the city engineer, may cause risk to either pedestrian or street traffic."
