• » PACKAGES OF FOODSTUFFS. PROPOSED NEW REGULATIONS. DISCUSSED BY DEALERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. At the Grocers' Conference, Mr. Myers (Department of Health) opened discussion on weights and measures and foodstuffs. He stated that the Minister of Health had instructed him to issue a statement that the Department intended Ito introduce a system already prevailing for butter and tea, requiring in the case of commonly used foodstuffs sold in paper wrappers and packages that the weight shall be one pound or an even proportion of a pound, also that liho Department -will gut in touch with ! manufacturers and packers in order to determine the date after which it will be necessary that the weight of the contents of a tin or a jar shall be one pound or a multiple of a pound, or even a proportion thereof j also, that Hot less than two years be allowed manufacturers to enable them to dispose of stocks prior to the new regulation. Representatives spoke- generally in favour of the suggestion, but manufacturers present stated that, owing to very different weights for the same bulk of many products, manufacturers who had standardised container sizes could, not, with their machinery, g«t the samp weight for all products, While to alter the machinery would involve great ex.-. pense. Mr. Myers said the Department would endeavour to draft regulations to meet this difficulty.
