PAPAROA ON FIRE.
THE STEAMER ABANDONED. AI/L HANDS SAFE. SYDNEY, March 18. Underwriters in Sydney have received atlvice of a serious fire In No. 3 hold on the steamer Paparoa, which is no\v off the south-west coast of South Africa. A late message from Capetown states that the fire broke out When the Papafoa was about 500 miles from Capetown. She was bound to Australia from the United Kingdom and was due to call at Capetown. , T|ie Australian liners Barrabool, Diogenes and Heneas all responded to the call for help late at night. All the Paparoa's passengers and 24 of the crew were transferred to the Barrabool, arid the remainder of the crew stood by. Filially the Paparoa had to be abandoned at II p.m. The crew and passengers are due at Capetown on Friday aboard the Barra.boot.— (A. and N.£.— Keuter.) I The Paparoa, a steel twin-screw steamer of 7737 tons gross register, was built at Dumbarton iil 1890 for the New Zealand Shipping Company, her present owners. She left Liverpool on her present voyage on February 20 for Adelaide, Melbourne, Geelong, Sydney arid Brisbane.
