Italy was somewhat late in entering the field of motor ship construction, and It is, therefore, ail the more remarkable that the three largest vesels to be equipped with Diesel machinery arfe now being built in Italian yards. One was launched at Mohfalcone, near Trieste, on December 20, and is perhaps even more remark-able from the point or view of machinery arrangement than for the actual size of the vessel. Named the Saturni.i. She is for the Soeullci) Line's regular service to South American The tonnage of the ship is given as 24,500. against 22,500 for the Anurias* whicli Hariand and Wolff are building foe the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, aiul which ran 'trials in January. The diiuen sions of the two ships ire. howevei-, approximately the same. The Jg'ngtli of the Saturriia is 610 ft between pWpendieiilars, with a beam Of 20ft 6lh asa a flepth of 46ft 6in. 'Each of her two engines develops nonnaly 9000 b.h.p.. or 10,00;] b.h.p. with supercharging, although it is intended that the superchargers shall be brought into operation only when an increase above the usual speed is required. The exhaust gases from the main and auxiliary machinery will be discharged through relatively short exhaust pipes': funnels, in the ordinary sense, will be absent from the vessel.
