BANK HOLIDAYS.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Ifc seems extraordinary in a pror gressive business community that banks still continue to close on Saint days and other holidays when business houses remain open. Apart from the fact that small storekeepers have no safe place to put their takings, the shopkeeper is repeatedly required to cash cheques or else refuse business as he cannot refer to the bank. A very awkward situation also arises for business people who have not got a guarantee bond with the Customs Department, as this branch will I not accept cheques unless certified to by the bunk, no matter how reputable the standing of the firm. In the case of St. Patrick's Day; 'invoices and bills of lading for large shipments only arrived on Tuesday evening, and importers tv&o were anxious to get their goods cleared were unable to do so, causing additional expense for storage, besides delay and possible detriment to perishable "cargo, also creating congestion in the passing of entries and handling on the day following. The bank officials do not appreciate these odd days, as the consequent rush of business next day, is a strain and nearly always results in overtime -work. Surely the business people and the general public are entitled to consideration in this matter, which is one the Chamber of Commerce might ■well, take up. —I am, etc., IiIPOKTEfi. !
