MUNICIPAL CONCERTS.
COMPETITION" FOR SATURDAY NIGHTS. Some of the Auckland City Councillors think that Saturday night at the Town Hall should be reserved for the municipal concerts, which were reported to be becoming more popular every week under the new arrangement. Mr. Eady raised the matter at a meeting of the concert management sub-committee, and the matter was further discussed last night. Mr. Phelan was very strong on keeping Saturday night for these concerts and not letting the hall to outside people. It was stated that some entertainers in order to get Saturday night took the hall for the whole week, although they might only use it for a couple of nights. This action was taken in order to get advantage of the council's rule allowing outsiders to have Saturdays if they hired the hall for the week. After further discussion the council decided that no action be taken and the present arrangement allowed to stand.
It had been suggested by a councillor that "touring artists; of a high quality" should be allowed to engage the Municipal Band and choir for Town Hall purposes if they desired. Mr. Phelan strongly objected to this "commercialisation of band and choir." The council threw out the suggestion.
