SWIMMING.

BRIER'S FIRST APPEARANCE.

WINS 100 YARDS INVITATION.

BEATEN" BY CUNNOLD IN 220 YARDS,

MISS. G. PIDGEON LOWERS RECORD.

It was disappointing that there were not more people present at the first of three, carnivals to be given by the Waitemata Amateur Swimming Club in the Tepjd Baths last night, ,in honour of th visit of Reg.- Grier, the Queensland champion swimmer, but those who did attend were treated, to a .display of swimming that Jiaa-seldom been seen in Auckland. Reg. Grier made his debut

in Auckland by winning the 100 yds invitation scratch race in 58s, which is 3-5s better than the New Zealand record, after a brilliant exhibition. A. D. Adamson, the Auckland champion, was beaten by a 1 yard for first place. E. V. Cunnold, with 8s beat Grier for first place in the 220 yds handicap race, which was also a splendid exhibition of swimming, drier did well considering he only arrived in Auckland from Sydney on Tuesday morning, and his two future appearances will see him at the top of his form. Grier received an ovation when introduced by Mr. W. J. Davidson, and he fully satisfied all present that lie is a swimmer who uses his head in a race. He came up well in the last lap of the 220 yds and was overhauling Cunnold by leaps and bounds when the latter touched three yards in front of him. Another event that proved most interesting was Miss Gladys Pidge'on's successful attempt to lower the 220 yds breast-stroke record of 3.40 1-5, held by Miss D. Breward (Christchurch). Her time was 2-5s faster than Miss Ettie Robertson's Australian record. Mis 3 Pidgeon was paced by A. J. Morris, and, going strongly, covered the distance in 3.40, lowering the record by one-fifth of a second. The remaining events were highly successful and most interesting, and provided unlimited entertainment. The officials are to be congratulated upon their expedition and attention all details, and it is hoped that the second carnival on Saturday afternoon will see a crowd worthy of the high class of programme to be submitted.
