ONEHUNGA EN FETE.
A 'SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL
The most important public function during the year at Onehunga is the holding of the annual Carnival, when the people unite to promote commercial in-' tcrests of the town. This event took place yesterday, it having been postponed from last November, owing to the Parliamentary .elections, and was an unqualified success. Fine weather , prevailed throughout the day which encouraged the crowds to visit thebu-sy-centre. Shop : windows- were very dressed, and there was a colourful display of bunting- from various points. - ■ A spectacular event in the afternoon was a procession-of decorated motor cars from the Royal Oak to the Post Office and back again. ■ Decorated, perambula-' tors, push carts and boy's trolleys 1 were : included, and dealers in motorcars took advantage of this procession and, fol-> lowed with, seven decorateil motor cars,, aiid giving away envelopes, one of which contained the" promise' to the -recipient" of the gift of a new. motor tyre: . An-, other business firm followed ■■-with a. motor, lorry haying, on board' a concrete boiler.and wash, tub, with-a man; washing .articles, in .the tub with, .water heated • in ■ theY boiler. The - proceedings' .in- the - afternoon, were, further enlivened': with selections of music' by Burnhahd's band. - From a trade viewpoint.the^.mp'st inter-esting-.cpnipetitignwas between the shop-' keepers/, who. had entered <for the win"dpwH!iresßing..cQmpetition,_the. conditions being .that" they'should confine their display "to their, own trade lines. The One-, hiinga WboHen Mills made a fine exhibi-;; tibn-of rugs, and other products in a shop, at - the corner of Queen and Arthur Streets. ""■'.',«•' '•■■ ■ ■■..-• .• ■ / '
Numerous: inquiries were niade during the afternoon !arid evening for "Mr. and Mrs. "Concession, , ' who were giving away books J ,6f -.concession- tickets,- enabling those persons who were fortunate enough to identify", (hem to fravel free between' the, city; and Onehunga. Huge, cro>vds, bright lights, and music by the Onehunga Town; Band transfbrined•' Queen Street into, a'-.real'* carnival' centre :at night. There were Scottish dancers, jazz bands, aiid -native dancers. The • corner of Queen and; Church Streets was the centre of attraction to' many as it .was illumi-: hated to pennit'of jazzing in the street. The -carnival was promoted-and -carried out by the Onehunga Chamber of Commerce, to wholiri credit is due. for. the success achieved.
- Messrs A. Kent, A. W. Andrews and G. G. Marriott judged the" window displays, and awarded first prize to Mr. J. W. T. Macklow, and the second to Messrs.. J;. E.: Hill and Son.. *The Auck-' land Meat Go. and Heath's, Ltd., Ayere highly. commended. ■' ■ ■ ■
Mr; F. H. l)odd obtainetl the first prize for the l>est decorated motor car, and Mrs. Allen second prize! For the best-' decorated peramfc-jlatpr Sybil Dick was 'first, A. McLeod second, and 'J. McLeod third.: '■ " ' - -• " .
The firewdrics display had to be abandoned on account of heavy rain. - ;
