AUCKLAND BANDS.

(To tie Editor.) Sir, —Now that our A and B. Band. have returned from the Dunedin Band Contest, I -wish to congratulate the A grade band on winucng the marchniecompetition, which speaks well for the drill instructor, and goes to show what a capable man can do. But what about the music (or test selections) ? It must be patent to all that there is something lacking that our bands never get-any-where in the selections. To my the reason is that our conductors are not sufficiently able to lead them to victory certainly not the A grade test. I doubt if any of our bands would win the B test It must be very disheartening for O nr bandsmen to try year after year, and be at the bottom of the list, when it is acknowledged that we have some of : the best players in the Dominion. Can,not something be done to import a conI ductor, who has had a real good traininrr iihat would raise the musical standard of jail our city bands. There is do ream ; why Tie should not have more than one I band to train. It is simply wasting itime and money going on as the band! 1 are doing. Anyone can tell that their j standard has nor improved for several j years; they are simply at a standstill.—" I- am, etc., WELLWISHEK.
