LAWN TENNIS
THREE PUBLIC COURTS. IX KITCHENER PARK. Three public courts in Kitchener Park, for the use of Mllford and Takapuna players, ■will be opened on Saturday afternoon by the Mayor of Takapuna (Mr. J. D. Morrison). Some two years ago, Mr. Rushbrook handed over the whole area of Kitchener Park to the residents, for the ■preservation of the lovely natural bush on the property, which is situated on the shores of Lake Takapuna, and for the provision of playing areas. The three tennis courts are the outcome of the activities of the Milfoiid Recreation Committee, which has also worked for the provision of other sports areas in the park. All the labour entailed in the laying down of the courts was voluntary, and performed free of charge, wiile the committee erpended , a fairly large sum of money on the necessarymaterials, trusting that the residents in whose interest the work was carried out would be glad to patronise the courts freely.
The three full courts have a good hard surface, though they have not been ibultmnenlsed. and may properly be termed "chip courts." The scale of charges is to be lotv, in order that players in all stations of life may be enabled to enjoy a game. With a view to encouraging young players, the committee has decided to charge a special low rate for juveniles, for whom the courts will be reserved one afternoon in each week throughout the season.
It is hoped that the opening ceremony on Saturday afternoon will be largely attended. Speakers will include the Mayor, the president of the Mllford Progressive Association (Mr. A. Warbriek), and the president of the Recreation Committee (Mr. h. J. iMinogue).
