LATE REV. H. J. HUFFANDINE.
REVERED MINISTER. REV. W. SAUNDER'S TRIBUTE. When making his presidential address this morning at Beresford Street Church to the delegates attending the Congregational Union meetings, the new chairman, the Rev. W. Saunders, of Dunedin, paid a tribute to the late Rev. H. J. Huffandine, who had been chosen as chairman, but who had passed away in the meantime. "Recalling now his earnestness as a preacher," said Mr. Saunders, "his many labours, his brightness of spirit, his brotherliness to all, his courage in suffering, his peace in the Valley of the Shadow, let us make of these our wreath more imperishable in its beauty than one of flowers, and dedicate it reverently to his memory." To the chair of the Union, thus sorrowfully made vacant, continued Mr. Saunders, the executive committee had called him (the speaker). One of their newer ministers, and they had such in plenty, would have been the more natural choice, but for various reasons, which told more of the people's graciousness than of his deservings, he found himself presiding over the council, a council from which much was expected, and that in any case would always be memorable because of the most welcome and influential deputation present from their sister churches in Australia. (Applause).
