WHY THE PRETENCE?

" AMATEUR " PLAYERS. LONDON, February 10.' The "Daily Herald," in an editorial, says that an absurd pretence is kept up that lawn tennis players, whose, performances interest the public throughout -the world, are amateurs. It is supposed that the game would somehow detericr-rate,-and they would lose caste if players admitted that their expenses were paad —with a bit over. Some it seems, are hired by tennis ball makers to push sales; others have arrangements with film companies; some write for newspapers - or allow their names to appear at the top of articles. Why not quash the scandal, continues the article, and admit that the most famous tennis players .really are professionals? Only antiquated prejudice would find anything derogatory to such a course.
