THAMES RESIDENT : ;, (By —Own Correspondent) , a THAMES, this day. • Robert Law was charged in Court with the ■ theft of seven sacks of potatoes; £ from a Chinese garden on February 6, " I and William Antridge was charged iriti aiding iv the conimission of the f I Evfdenee showed that the Chinese dug " IS sacks of potatoes on February j>, leaving them on the ground, ac nignt approached. Xext morning sevea eacKS had disappeared. He informed the police, who on investigating , , found four sacK3 * of potatoes concealed behind a hut about j a mile from the garden, on the Ka-uae-j ranga Road. A Chinese was instructed jto watch these until a constable could be sent out to keep watch, but he weH3 , back to work. It was found at four ~ I o'clock that the potatoes had A ' peared, but potatoes alleged to be tie ? I same were found later in the evening u» a Law's cart in bis yard in Thames. La* 1 was take to the 'Police Station, vhere a! he . gave several contradictory stattn ments as to how he came by the pott"' c toes. The magistrate, Mr. Salmon, disbelieved him, and imposed a fine ot*« and costs. Antridge was discharge*.
