ECLIPSE OF THE SUN.

OBSERVATION IN BATAVIA(Recelved 1 p.m.) BATAVTA, January 14. Fifty astronomers Itom many countries observed the solar eclipse and achieved mixed results, according to their location, though the sky was not perfect. The leader of the British expedition at Bancoolen, on the west coast of Sumatra, carried out the full programme, and saw a corona similar to that observed in India in 1899. Clouds prevented completely satisfactory results being obtained at Palembang, on the opposite side of the island.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
