WHY RACEHORSES REVERSE FORM.
"SPEED" TRAINING BLAMED. LONDON, January I. Mr. George Lambton, the famous trainer, declares that the British racehorse is deteriorating. , "The only remedy," he says, "is to increase the number of long races and diminish the number of short races. The continued high pressure to make horses win short races causes strain to the lungs, heart, and nerves of yoking horses. Therefore, it must lead to a deterioration in the breed. • -• "Formerly races were run to allow horses.to finish with speed. Now horses are taught to go their hardest from the moment the gate, rises-. A hardridden finish is not harmful if the horse is fresh and if the. jockey isn't a.butcher. But if the horse is tired, it is calculated to leave a mark that he will never forget. Especially is this the case with two-year-olds and three-year-olds. "The present system is responsible for irregular form. A horse wins by. 10 lengths to-day and finishes down the course to-morrow. Trainers and jockeys are not to blame. The simple explanation is that horses are trained for speed, and stamina is neglected."
