SUMMER RACING.

THE THAMES MEETING. OPENS AT DEVONPORT TO-MORROW. THE FIELDS REVIEWED. Owing to extensive alterations to their course at Thames the Tha?nes Jockey Club are unable to race there this 'summer, and they have been granted permission to hold their annual meeting at the Takapuna Club's course. The fixture opens to-morrow, and though in the majority of instances the fields are not large, there is sufficient material to provide a really good day's sport. The programme will open at 11.45 a.m. with the Totara Hurdles. Irish Jig is a pretty useful customer over a mile and a-half. while Bustler appears to be back to form by the way he jumped at Ellerslie yesterday morning. Bahadur is a promising maiden, while among those lower down Miss Ford showed ability at the Taumarunui meeting. Probably when the machine closes Irish .lig, Miss Ford and Bustler may be supported in that order. The Trial Handicap provides the best field of the day, for at present there are 20 engaged. Eh Timi won a couple of five furlong races at Taranaki, while Cocoanut ran second to Birthmark in the October Handicap, six furlongs, at the Wellington spring meeting, and third to Bay Dighton and Wyoming in the Gordon Handicap, one mile, at the Auckland spring meeting. Sulla showed up well at the Waikato Hunt and Waikato Racing Club meetings over six and seven furlongs. Maveelish is a promising sort and recently finished second in a six furlong event at Whangarei, while Scot Free was third to him. Homai and Cherry Girl have both been placed. Probably Cocoanut, Eh Timi and Maveelish may be most fancied. The Hauraki Handicap has a field of 13. Siaosi has the C.J.C. Easter Handicap to his credit, and recently at Ellers-1 lie he showed up in his races for a while. Joy Ride is capable of running a good seven furlongs if at his best. Prince Abbey demonstrated at the last Takapuna meeting that he was about at his best, for he won the concluding event, the Ngataringa Welter, seven furlongs, by two lenghs in 1.28, with 7.9 on his back. Archeen does not seem to hop out of the barrier too well, but has a lot of pace. Ring the Bell has always'to. be reckoned with, while Charlady has been working \yell of late and her second to Lady Ridicule in the Christmas Handicap will ensure her friends. Loyal Irish appears to be coming back to form, while Mosaic is a really good sort, and a most consistent performer. Namutere strode over six furlongs all right at Ellerslie yesterday. When the final figures are adjusted Mosaic, Prince Abbey and Ring the Bell may be the public choice. They are not a very good lot in the .Borough Handicap. Scat was second in the Vauxhall Handicap, seven furlongs, at the last Takapuna meeting, and returned a long price, while, he won a similar distance event at the Taranaki Christmas meeting. Cocoanut is in the Trial Handicap, and her performances are mentioned there. Quincoma has performed fairly over five and six fur-1 longs, while Killute has won one five and a-half furlong race. Of the others Hangawera and' Queen Comet show most promise. Probably the last two mentioned and Scat will be best supported. The Goldfields Cup has drawn a 'field of eight. Surveyor 'is top weight with 9.0, and he has only got to be at his best to be hard to dispose of. He showed up well at Ellerslie in his races. Daylight, who is next with 7.1, has been mostly a sprinter, though he finished fourth to Spoony, Lady Ridicule and Desert Glow in the St. Andrew's Handicap, nine furlongs, at the last Takapuna meeting. He has recently been trained at Papakura by J. T. Jamieson. The six others engaged are on the 7.0 mark, and on recent performances Right and Left has most to commend him. Probably Surveyor, Right and Left and Daylight will be most fancied. Tea Bell and Tea Time are sure to carry most money in the Nursery Handicap, an event for two-year-olds, while Wenday, if started, Miss Vera and Holymond may be the elect in the Puriri Handicap. The first-named has been away from the track for some days and it has been stated that she'was lame. King Pot won.a six furlongs event at the previous meeting held at Takapuna, beating a good .field, and he, Day Guard and Civility, are sure to be in demand for the Flying Handicap, with which the meeting concludes. There will v b e a frequent ferry service to Devonport. The programme is as follows:—' . •
