BANKING RETURNS.
MONEY LESS PLENTIFUL. ' ADVANCES EXCEED DEPOSITS. FINANCING HEAVY IMPORTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Dominion banking returns for December quarter show the following figures: Free deposits, £25,189,553; fixed deposits, £20,540,809; Government deposits, £3,096,534; note circulation, £0,947,677; coin and bullion, £7,740,219; advances, £46,627,070; discounts, £1,927,----357. These figures provide a very interesting review of the financial position, and show that money is not nearly bo plentiful as it has been. The December quarter always shows a heavy drain on the banks' funds for the financing, gathering and marketing of the season's produce. In the September quarter there was an "excess of deposits over advances of £2,778,065, but the December quarter exhibits an excess of advances of £2,524,065, which means that the banks have been drawn on to the extent of £5,302,130. Besides producers' requirements, some of this has been needed to finance importations, which are on a heavy scale at present.
