COLLISION AT SEA.
MANY CHINESE DROWNED. , SHANGHAI, January 11. "'■ The Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Asia, 16,909 tons, collided with the 1869----ton coastal vessel Tung Shing. - Tlie Tung Shing broke in half and sank in four and a-half minutes. The Empress of Asia saved many lives. Between five and ten of the Chinese passengers and crew of the Tung Shing were drowned. After minor repairs had been effected the Empress of Asia proceeded on her voyage to Vancouver.—(Reuter.) The Indo-China S.N.C., Jardine, Matheson, and Co., is British, and the officers of the Tung Shing, with the exception of the engineer, are English. Her commander, probably Captain Bichard, has been on her for many years. The accident must have occurred in the Yangtsze, the harbour dues not permitting these large Empress boats going up.
