MINERS OF NOVA SCOTIA.

REASONS FOR THE STRIKE. WAGES THE ROOT CAUSE. HALIFAX, January 10. Sir Andrew Bae Duncan, IRoyal Commissioner, has issued his report after two months of investigation into the coal mining industry in Nova Scotia, and the causes which led to the recent strike. The latter lasted for many months, during which there was rioting and raiding of stores. Sir Andrew finds that the British Empire Steel Corporation, operator of the mines, was justified in demanding a wages cut of 10 per cent in 1924, hut was not justified in making a cut in 1922. • The Commissioner recommends a system of open accounting between the operators and the men; and a revision of the wages scale every six months. ■ Other recommendations are Tnade regarding the management of the mines. The causes of recurrent unrest among the miners.. are found to include the company's opposition to the United Mine Workers' Union, the activities of Communists and friction within the union. Tlie Commissioner recommends that the company should acknowledge and co-operate with the United Mine Workers' International Union. — (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
