A BANK WARNING.
The banking returns for the December quarter are a warning to the people of New Zealand to go cautiously. . The advances are two and a half millions in excess of the deposits, as compared with one and_ a quarter millions in the corresponding quarter of 1024. In the last quarter of the year advances are swollen by requirements of producers, and the shipping strike was an abnormal factor in this period of 1925. Nevertheless, the great increase in the excess of advances should be carefully noted. In the ' September quarter there was a balance the other way of two and threequarter millions, which means that the banks have been drawn upon to the extent of £5,300,000. This would not be so worthy of attention if prices had remained at the 1924 level, but they have not; they have fallen. .In addition, output in two main lines is less. Not only are the banking returns less favourable than they were twelve months ago, but the outlook is less promising.
