MILK 7d A QUART.
A PENNY RISE IN THE CITY.' RESULT OF DRY SPELL. ALL SURPLUS SUPPLIES ABSORBED - Owing to the shortage of feed resultant upon the dry spell, the price - of nuHf in Auckland has been raised from 6d to 7d a quart. During the past fortnight the mill, supply has shown a 'rapid decline, and although the regular sources are still sufficient to meet the city's requirements the position is most unusual for January] The hot weather that came in suddenly a month ago has been continuous, and the only considerable fall of rain was on New Year's Eve. This, however, had only a slight effect upon pastures, and the conditions in -most districts ar« those of an ordinary Auckland autumn. A resident of New Lynn stated that he had not known the country to be so dry in early January for 19 years, and the conditions in most districts are similar except that areas where the farms have paspalum pastures are free from th. parched-up appeearance of most suburbs. There is no surplus milk in Auckland at present, and a milk vendor said to-day that the showers of last night would not have the slightest effect upon conditionlocally. The rainfall at Albert Park for the 24 hours ending at 9 a.m. to-day amounted to .06in. making a total of .14in for this month. There had been a decline in tbe barometer reading sinca nine o'clock yesterday morning, but the glass was still high at 29.82 in.
