Steamer Mataban will arrive to-night from New York. She is bringing 12 passengers and 2000 tons of cargo for Auckland. The great improvement taking place in trade, political, and transport conditions in India commented upon by a visitor from India to-day. Results published to-day of the first examination of Auckland candidates for membership of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers of London. Further keen bidding at the Christchurch wool sale yesterday, with a slight rise in prices. Only 300 out of 20,000| bales were passed in. Dominion bowling tournament opens at , Dunedin on Monday. Auckland will be well represented. The British, bowling team is among the competitors. An elderly resident of Parnell, Mrs. Emma Thorburn, was knocked down by a motor car in Newmarket last evening, and died a few hours later at the Hospital. Auckland Stock Exchange reopens on Monday after the Christmas vacation. It will meet at the Chamber of Commerce, as its own premises were ruined by fire in the holidays.
