THEATRES AT CHRISTMAS.
?or some years picture theatre proprietors in the city have been allowed to show on' Christmas Day, tut this year permission has been refused by the Council. In most of the suburbs picture theatres will be open, and "we are informed that there is no prohibition in southern cities. If the Council was influenced, by a wish that the theatre employees should have a day off, ita motive can be respected, but it was open to councillors to pass a proposed amendment that permission be granted subject to no employee being called upon to work. The mover of this amendment suggested that in.the interests of consistency the Council should consider closing the Zoo on Christmas Day. It is a pertinent suggestion. Why should picture theatres be closed and the Zoo kept open? Is it proposed that the Municipal Band shall .spend its Christmas afternoon there playing to citizens; and if so, what is the difference between the band's position and that of a theatre orchestra?
