UPPER HARBOUR NEWS.
A party of county men are at work on the grading of the Riverhead to Albany main highway. The formation is being widened to 16ft, and the bad corners rounded off. The metal is to be 10ft wide,, and is now stacked at Riverhead ready for spreading. This metal is all which is available from the loan, and -will reach about one. and a-quarter miles, starting from the Riverhead Bridge. The advantage of local shingle has now been definitely proved through an experimental five-chain stretch having been put down near Rangitopuni Bridge last winter. This has set splendidly, and is holding and wearing well. The Pukeatua Ratepayers' Association has long been urging the County Council and highway authorities to use local shingle and metal. Mr. T. Wake, president, of the association, lately, however, waited upon Mr. Tyndal, chief engineer lor the highways' board, at his olVice in Wellington, and asked support for the use of local shingle. Mr. Tyndal replied that he not only favoured its use, but was urging the use of local shingle upon all local authorities »up and down, the Dominion. Mr. Murray, county engineer for the eastern ridings, has now arranged to spread local shingle from the end of the metal referred to above to connect with the -five-chain experimental strip, -which was laid in winter. This will give a continuous hard surface for about one and a-half miles from Riverhead. It will give further satisfaction to ratepayers to know that this cheaper material will now be used for blinding the imported metal.
