A CRUEL HOAX.

MESSAGE FROM THE RIPPLE.

XAME SPELT "WROXGLY. (By Telegrapli.— Press Association.) WAIROA (H. 8.), this day. The alleged note from, the lost Ripple signed "Engineer Neilson," reached Sergeant Wade last night, and he handed it to the local manager of the Richardson Steamship Company.

Comparison of the writing with a specimen of Xeilson's in the office records clearly proves the whole thing to be a cruel hoax, the product of a person with a perverted sense of humour. The name is spelt wrongly, and the writing quite different in character.

The message referred to was in a corked bottle picked up on the ■■Mohaka Beach on Sunday: "S.S. Ripple, engine trouble, daTk and. stormy night, sinking fast. One boat got away, 'but don't think it will reach shore.—Engineer Neilson."
