MISS FICKENS RETIREMENT. APPRECIATION OF BOARD. At a meeting of the Grammar Schools Board of Governors yesterday afternoon, , eulogistic reference to the services of i ' Miss W. Picken, headmistress at the ■' gf ils' school at Howe Street, who is i ] retiring at the end of the present school I ; yeur, was made by the chairman, Proi' fessor A. P. W. Thomas. ■ j In suggesting that a letter of apprecia- > ! tion should be sent, the chairman stated 1 that Miss Picken had rendered valuable services during her long association with the Grammar School. Joining as jj an assistant teacher, Miss Picken had c I later served as first assistant, and for c ' the past six years had ranked as header I mistress. Under her management the ; I reputation of the school for sound edue ■ cation had been maintained and en- ,. jhanced. Miss Picken had also exercised ;, i a wise influence in the development of ■a the character of her pupils. Whilst the a: board regretted Miss Picken's retire- i y ment, it wished to assure her that she s retired enjoying the highest esteem of c the board and with its best wishes for s the future. o The suggestion of the chairman was c adopted.
